Friends, Spring is in the air, and we’re supes-excited about what that means for local produce. Think of all the fresh fruit crumbles, muffins, pies and bars we’ll be able to come up with! We’re dreaming up recipes that we hope will blow your mind, so be sure to check in often for new, gluten-free noms.
Back to produce. (Or more specifically, fruit).
Wondering what we’re so stoked about? Here are two local lovelies that we’re dying to bake into something -
Some people are a little scared of rhubarb because of its tartness, but rhubarb is incredible in baking. Commonly paired with strawberries - to add a little natural sweetness - rhubarb is especially great in fruit crumbles, pies and muffins.
It’s typically in-season locally in late April through May, and sure enough, we’ve begun to find it at local grocery stores and small Farmer’s Markets. (Finally!) You can tell it’s ripe for plucking by its colour—bright red.
(The inside will be pale green, but don’t let that discourage you from thinking it’s ready to consume.)
Big note: rhubarb leaves are toxic if ingested, so if your rhubarb comes with leaves, be sure to discard carefully and keep away from children and pets.
Traditionally in-season late May through early July, local strawberries are ripe and ready to go when they’re fragrant and boast a deep red hue. Another way to be sure is to take a bite of one—they should be sweet, flavourful and the centre should be deep red, too.
If you grow strawberries at home in your own garden, you should be seeing blossoms pretty soon—this Spring has already teased us with a few hot days, so the strawberry plants definitely think it’s go time.
Compared to last year, they’re going to be early!
We’ve been promising Keto-friendly eats, and if you’re following us on social media - or pop into the shop lots - you probably know that we’ve now added Keto toast to our everyday menu!
Here’s what’s in this hearty, Keto-friendly snack:
- Almond flour

So. Try our Keto toast, and keep your peepers open for new goodies featuring fresh, local produce such as rhubarb and strawberries.
That’s your job.
